Textile Arts and Design
The foundations of the current Department were laid out by the establishment of the weaving and artistic embroidery workshops within the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest. After the Second World War, the Fine Arts Institute “Nicolae Grigorescu” expanded with a department strongly oriented toward textile arts. The future development of the textile industry asked for the emergence of a powerful creation body both for textures and for printing. It is in this context that the graphic artist Maria Pana-Buescu was appointed coordinator of the specialization of printing with serigraphic sieves; her artistic personality and her pedagogical talent left their mark on generations of graduates. At the same time, with respect to the fabrics specialization, Titina Calugaru taught the tapestry course and collaborated with great artists such as the mural artist Stefan Constantinescu and the ceramist-sculptor Mac Constantinescu. The true competition in the field of tapestry emerged with the first generations of artists-graduates in the decade 1955-1965. Until the ‘70s, a strong generation of tapestry artists was created, and by the ‘80s and ‘90s tapestry had many adepts in Romania, graduates of higher education. The Textile Arts specialization was developed in two directions based on distinct technologies: tapestry-textures and textile printing. Among the professors who carried out their work in the field of textile arts one can name the following: Emilia Niculescu Petrovici, Ileana Balota, Leontina Mailatescu, Ecaterina Teodorescu, Maria Mihalache-Blendea, Teodora Moisescu-Stendl, Florica Vasilescu, Irina Stanga, Radu Avram, Lucia Pepenaru, Olga Birman Sabau. Nowadays, from a category of decorative arts, textile arts have become a means of expression compatible with the contemporary spirit, which answers to the necessities of articulation and conceptualization. Over the last decades, we have witnessed the transformation of textile matter from a carrier of plastic message into plastic substance in itself. Consequently, the study program Textile Arts – Textile Design is undergoing a process of correlation with the labor market, with the possibility of introducing in the course description the newest developments in the design method, in the use of new materials and of the digital transfer technology.
We are represented by the history of our specialization, the seriousness and correctness of our teaching personnel consisting of professional artists in the field, the good reputation and the professional success of our graduates. We believe that the student’s individual study and the professor’s educational effort with each student is essential in the correct, personalized training of the future professionals.
The Bachelor’s studies cycle offers general knowledge and develops abilities in the field of textile art and design: textile arts as artistic expression (fiber art, object, installation) in textile medium; textile design for interior design collections; textile design for clothing collections (fabrics or prints). The Master’s studies cycle in ambient textile arts offers the students the opportunity to complete a proposed project with an emphasis on: creativity, original personal contribution, investigation, interpretation and innovative experiment. There is also the opportunity to enroll in the professional doctorate program, the final phase in the development of an authentic artistic personality.
Our activities are carried out within areas / study and design workshops, technological areas – laboratories for the transfer of creations in textile medium, experiments and applied research subjects in the educational activity (textile printing, tapestry-textures and computerized image processing), a specialized library (over 250 reference titles in the field, periodicals).
