The Graphic Arts Department aims at training multi-disciplinary specialists in the area of graphic arts, be they visual artists who can carry out their activities in diverse environments and employ different techniques, or specialists in the applied areas specific to graphic arts. The multitude of directions in which are students are trained during the three years of Bachelor’s studies bring together the autonomous artistic creation in the field of visual arts, engraving and multiplication techniques, advertising graphics, book graphics, illustration and the art of writing, digital image processing or photographic image seen as an element circumscribed to graphic creation.
Within our Department, a special emphasis is placed on acquiring rigorous skills based on drawing and visual composition, seen as constitutive elements in the formation of the plastic alphabet and as starting points for any type of future artistic endeavor. In parallel, the development of each student’s creative potential is capitalized on constantly, through encouraging the individual artistic discourse, through gaining a critical understanding of the evolution of the visual phenomenon in general and of the contemporary visual phenomenon in particular, as well as through the continuous responsiveness to the new trends. With respect to the applied fields, it is worth mentioning that there is a constant preoccupation among the teaching personnel in the Department with correlating the educational process with the market’s concrete demands through the carrying out of orders for real clients, as an integral part of class projects, aiming to familiarize the students during their studies with the exigencies of their future professional activity.
The Graphic Arts Department owns six studios for the core subjects – two for each year of study –, two specialized engraving laboratories equipped with engraving press, letterpress and lithography press, a photo laboratory and a computer laboratory equipped with Macintosh and PC systems. Through their training and experience, the teaching personnel ensures the students’ training in the various subjects and specializations mentioned above; the educational process is enriched periodically with workshops and lectures organized within the Department, to which specialists in specific fields who come from outside the academic environment are invited to share their experience.

Techniques of plastic representation – The bases of color
Study of nature having as model: the human figure, diverse objects, natural shapes, animal morphology, spatial structures or landscape. We will study notions and exercises such as the complementary contrast, the quality contrast, the simultaneity contrast or the warm-cool, light-shadow, vibrated-flat relations, on various motifs and subjects. We will pursue the students’ assimilation of technical methods specific to painting techniques depending on the materials employed (tempera, watercolor, acrylic). We will also take into consideration specific aspects of color concerning illustrations, printing or digital representation techniques.
Techniques of plastic representation – The bases of drawing
Study of nature having as model: the human figure, diverse objects, natural shapes, animal morphology, spatial structures or landscape. We will carry out figuration exercises for disciplining perception and for highlighting the shapes under study and exercises for understanding and describing the visible offer. We will address issues concerning linear figuration in order to understand the construction of a complex structure. We will pursue the development of elements of language specific to the techniques employed and to the plastic expression which, through gradual exercises, will aim to underline the expression of the figured shape through modulated contours, directed contrasts, deforming or underlining features, through the controlled direction of light, a.o.
Techniques of plastic representation – The bases of composition and the analysis of visual language
The transmission of fundamental notions concerning composition seen from the angle of understanding the abstract structure of any type of image. Compositional exercises with primordial shapes (line, point, square, triangle, circle). During the second semester we will pursue the deepening of the understanding of notions of composition seen from the angle of understanding the abstract structure of any type of image. Approaching composition themes from the perspective of solutions and proposals in the history of art. Compositional exercises with different techniques and formats.
Techniques of plastic representation – The bases of modeling
Study of nature having as model: the human figure, geometrical or natural shapes, animal morphology, spatial structures. We will carry out figuration exercises for disciplining perception and highlighting shapes under study through exercises of understanding and illustrating volumes.
Tehnicile gravuriiThrough the figuration of shapes, we aim to diversify textures and structures specific to engraving techniques and to adapt the basic principles of the three traditional printmaking techniques: planographic, intaglio, relief printing. Planographic printing –technique employed: monotype. Dry printing – technique employed: color engraving (collography). Intaglio (etching – the active surface is inside the cavities created on the surface of the plate by gluing different materials – technique employed: color engraving). Relief printing – technique employed: color engraving.
Computerized image processing
The subject aims to familiarize the students with the means of text processing and computerized image processing, with the assimilation and use of the main programs, especially graphic ones. Teaching basic notions, assimilating programs for image processing, page layout exercises. At the same time, consciously employing letters as plastic elements in the field, exercises concerning the use of different fonts and letter type with plastic virtues.
Acquiring notions concerning the representation through drawing of the human figure and which play an important part in establishing the bases of the plastic alphabet. Study of nature having as model the human figure in different poses. Understanding the proportions and the morphology of the human body. Exercises of linear, pictorial or sculptural representation.
Techniques of two- and three-dimensional representation
The course aims to deepen the understanding of issues concerning plastic representation, as well as of means of approaching the image from a compositional point of view. Exercises of compositional solving of themes through varied means and techniques. Deepening the knowledge about drawing and color techniques. Notions about visual narratives. Relating to distinct creations and attitudes characteristic to different moments in art history in order to identify each student’s individual means of expression.
Editorial and advertising graphics – Fundamental elements of language
Approaching the visual themes from the perspective of applied graphics, as well as solving them depending on the specificity of techniques and areas of interest in the field. Assimilating specific elements of language: drawing, color, letter, photography, collage, a.o. Approaching themes in the field of applied graphics which take into consideration the means of conveying the advertising message, as well as the different types of the visual metaphor encountered. Carrying out exercises concerning the relation between letter and image or notions of printing techniques. Analyzing different means of conveying a message through graphic image.
The course aims to make students familiar with the means of text processing and computerized image processing, with assimilating and manipulating the main graphic programs. We will approach representation techniques and photographic image processing. We will consider retouching techniques of photographic images, assimilating basic commands of the programs regarding the preparation of the image to be used in other editing and multimedia programs.
Traditional engraving techniques
Redefining the great themes of materiality – engraving as an art genre in itself. Imposing the real shape in the plastic plan, by defining it against the environment and other shapes, by describing its volumes and their modeling. Identifying the structural and textural attributes of the same shape through specific maneuvers of fundamental signs. The inventory of traditional techniques of engraving and printmaking. Intaglio: a . Aquaforte (successive strikes); b. Aquatint (several strikes); c. Combined techniques: Aquaforte + aquatint + mezzotint.
Photo-video – Representation techniques
We aim to convey the basic knowledge meant to allow students to use photography as a working tool and as a means of plastic expression. Presenting the photographic camera: its development from the darkroom to its contemporary aspect; the formation of photographic image; types of photographic cameras; functions of cameras and means of achieving a correct exposure. Clarifying the means by which an artist can use photography: documentary purpose, exercise of image composition and drawing through light, the expression of photography as the final materialization of a work. We will propose laboratory experiences such as accomplishing stenops or contact images in order to observe effectively how the photographic image is formed.
The course adds to the preoccupations concerning the academic training and wishes to familiarize students with and introduce them to the professional internship in the contemporary artistic environment by organizing study visits to museums and galleries, by participating in the organization of group exhibitions, a.o., which helps the students place themselves in the art exhibition and promotion system. Moreover, we wish to accomplish concrete orders of graphic design by involving students in different projects in order to help them relate to the beneficiaries’ demands, which helps them opt for a correct approach of these types of works.
Compositional concepts in graphic arts
Approaching the plastic preoccupations, from a compositional perspective, in easel graphics, book graphics, illustration or in the different engraving techniques, and at the same time ensuring that the student develops abilities to relate to the contemporary artistic environment, and generating interrogative-constructive attitudes. Deepening and combining knowledge and technical means of drawing, color or other working media, adapting and using them as creatively as possible. By establishing relations with distinct creations and attitudes in diverse moments in the history of arts we aim to highlight personal formulas and the identification of each student’s individual means of expression.
Concepts of applied graphic arts
Approaching the plastic theme, from a compositional perspective, in applied graphic arts, as well as solving it depending on the specificity of techniques and areas of interest. We intend to accomplish an advertising campaign or parts of it for an event, product or institution. We will take into consideration the printing techniques adequate to the project with respect to the materials for printing and, as the case may be, the technical elements concerning on-line advertising. We wish to capitalize flexibly and efficiently on the student’s personal attitudes with respect to the results and on his / her relation with the new aesthetic opportunities granted by digital technology and printmaking.
Modern engraving techniques
Approaching the traditional printmaking techniques with the help of and through modern techniques, such as: computerized printing (the computer generates images). Combined printmaking, starting from laser printing to traditional printing: aquaforte, aquatint, pointe, drypoint, a.o. Combined printmaking starting from traditional printmaking (planographic printing, intaglio, relief printing) combined with figurative computer generated elements (using an inkjet printing machine, A4 format ).
Photo-video in the applied field
The course will be focused more on each student’s personal experiences, answering as concretely as possible to their needs of plastic research. The students’ proposals of projects will be analyzed both visually and conceptually. The presence of photography in applied graphics and the differences between artistic photography and advertising photography. Major themes in contemporary photography. Photography as a means of fixating the ephemeral art. Video art and installations. Computerized image processing, techniques of mystifications of reality – when needed and when not. Making portraits for Bachelor’s projects, whether photographic or not.
Internship – elaborating the Bachelor’s project
The course offers the framework for elaborating the Bachelor’s project. During the course, the students will apply all the notions acquired during specific courses in the first cycle of studies. Supervising the students in selecting a theme for the Bachelor’s project, relating adequately the techniques and means of expression to the proposed topic. We will capitalize on personal solutions, as well as on their correlation with the notions acquired during the previous years of study. The students will be offered support in finalizing their projects, in putting together a catalogue, in organizing the exhibition.
Computer Graphics – Multimedia Techniques
The course aims to familiarize students with the possibilities of digital technology in artistic creation, as well as in applied graphics, both at the practical and at the conceptual level. We will place great emphasis on the assimilation of new notions in the field of interactive graphics. We will go through a series of concepts and programs used in web design, such as Macromedia Flash and Macromedia Dreamweaver, so that students become able to design their own websites. Students will also be encouraged to conceive artistic projects making use of the above-mentioned programs. The course provides numerous examples both of artistic works employing digital technology and of multimedia artists, aiming to facilitate the understanding of the structuring principles of digital creation, and the students’ familiarization with the field of electronic creation.
The morphology of the plastic image in applied graphics and illustration
Identifying the specificity of the advertising image, having a strong visual impact, aiming to convey a particular message and acting in response to a well established purpose. Building the skills to create such images through easel graphics. Carrying out an adequate documentation, through direct study or photographic reportage and reconfiguring the results in images meant to answer to advertising needs both from the point of view of typography and as synthetic message.
The technique of the plastic message in applied graphics and illustration
Identifying the means to modify the specific and traditional attributes of primary images in order to render them more expressive and transform them into images with a stronger visual, advertising impact and especially in order to answer the demands of applied graphics: a convincing message and the ability to multiply it through printing. Choosing from traditional genres a specific image and reconfiguring it so as to meet the requirements of advertising graphics. Through specific framing, through the inclusion of expressive details, through photographic or computer processing, the initial image aims to explore the condition of plastic standards which can be included in a work with an intentional message, in an exhibition poster, in an advertising page designed for printing, in a synthetic creation such as a logo, a.s.o., and which can engage in a dialogue with the text. The purpose of this exercise is to establish an exciting but also coherent dialogue between a highly aesthetic and evocative image, imposed by tradition and techniques, processing programs, modern technological tools.
The morphology of the plastic image in engraving techniques
Introduction to traditional engraving techniques. Practicality and identity in engraving: a – definition; b – history; c – principles from the point of view of active and inactive surfaces. We pursue expressiveness and interpretation using elements characteristic to deep, relief and flat engraving.
Techniques of expressivity in drawing
From representing reality through drawing to creating it. Obtaining new expressions of the drawn sign. Adapting the grammar of traditional drawing to the vision of contemporary art. Adapting the new techniques to the students’ own projects. Exercises with the means of drawing in creating abstract compositions. Accomplishing figurative drawings with minimal means (point, line, stain). Expressing themselves through stylization, deformation, metamorphosis, essentializing in compositions of large dimensions.
Computer Graphics–Multimedia Techniques
The course aims to familiarize students with the possibilities of computer image processing, putting an emphasis on the assimilation of new notions in the field of dynamic image. We will go through a series of programs of video editing, such as Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere, and we also aim to correlate them with programs in the range of Macromedia studied during the previous semester, both in order to create multimedia projects and to accomplish the final graduation project. We encourage the use of notions and practical skills assimilated during the course in supporting the students’ own artistic discourse. At the same time, we analyze important artistic works which employ digital technology in order to support the understanding of the structuring principles of digital creation.
Means of expression in applied graphics and illustration
Designing in a professional manner advertising projects in conformity with the requirements of applied graphics, in response to orders and to very specific fields. Mastering a “symphonic” vision of the multitude of advertising compositions. Exercises, themes, projects, as part of a series or of a cycle, to accomplish any type of work in applied graphics, such as: series of illustrations or covers for a collection, commercial posters or mini-posters for a product or show, a cycle of advertising pages, etc. Making obvious the intention to conceive special compositions meant to provide a unique vision, an exercise resembling the concept of “variations on a theme”, arguing for the advertising theme, responding to orders, distinct approaches. Explicit concepts, in conformity with a personal program, accompanied by short theoretical presentations.
The technique of the plastic message in applied graphics and illustration
Identifying, assimilating and employing in a professional manner the so-called techniques of expressivization, of emphasizing the advertising message, of increasing the efficiency of the plastic composition in the field of applied graphics. The concept of an advertising campaign – for a product, an institution, a show, a political theme – with the relevant requirements: banner, posters and mini-posters, show elements or radio advertisements, a.o. We will take into account the theoretical and plastic presentation of an expressive and nuanced message clearly identified. The fundamental idea of the exercise is that the expressivization techniques used to the above-mentioned purposes represent a very specific field.
Means of expression in engraving techniques
Redefining the great themes of materiality: imposing in the plastic format the real shape, by defining it in relation to the environment and the other shapes, describing its volumes and modeling them, identifying the structural and textural attributes of the shape in question through specific maneuvers of the fundamental signs.
Monotype: 1. Transposing the drawing directly from the plaque; 2. Monoprint technique with watercolors; 3. Monoprinting technique with collage; 4. The frottage technique; 5. Monoprint technique, by transposing the computerized print.
Techniques of expressivization in drawing
Eliminating the dependence on the motif, practicing work based on concepts. Increasing the expressivity of the plastic language and attaining the desired visual impact on the audience. Developing their own stylistic attitude. Hand-drawing small-size abstract works and digitally processing them. Transposing them subsequently on greater dimensions with means which are not specific to drawing (large brushes, rollers, sprays, a.o.) Joint work on graffiti.
