The Fashion Department within the “Nicolae Grigorescu” Institute of Arts, initially founded in close connection with the clothing industry (in 1971), has transformed in presents times due to the accumulated experience, into a department responsive to the contemporary cultural phenomenon, including both artistic, scientific and technological directions, being open to all means of expression in the field of fashion, of costume creation and unconventional experiments related to garments. This interdisciplinary direction, started in the 1990s, reached remarkable performances acknowledged both nationally and internationally.

All throughout the years of study we pursue the issue of garment under all guises, from regular clothing, perfectly useful, to nonconformist costumes with artistic value. We hope we will continue to achieve garments rigid as sculptures, fixed in their moment of glory, but also costumes sagely built which determine or restrain movement and which live just as long as the performers give them life within a particular event.

Approaching the numerous means of artistic expression through garments will open new perspectives for future students toward the interdisciplinary areas, as well as toward all spectacle genres. We are convinced that this permanent challenge of ingenuity represents the best lesson and that these experiments will generate ideas that the future local fashion designers will believe in and develop. The cultural openness to experimental means brought about the opportunity of carrying out new interdisciplinary programs and courses, organized by specialists with great achievements in different areas of activity. We wish to continue our collaboration with as many personalities in the artistic field and the fashion domain as possible.

Taking into consideration the supervising professors’ different areas of expertise, we have developed a modular curricular system which allows for all the students’ access to the experience of the entire teaching personnel (covering multiple fields: fashion design, styling, brand launching, company image, costume performance, performing, object-garment). We similarly take into account issues related to fashion design per se integrated in the EU (by studying the same trends, technical methods of production and fashion management) as well as costume creation for spectacle. We encourage unconventional experiments which place the garment in the area of visual arts and we pay particular attention to the interdisciplinary artistic genres. With respect to the Master’s studies, in the program “Fashion and Costume Strategies” we aim to carry out interdisciplinary projects in the area of contemporary art phenomena or even at the border with scientific research, but also to experiment some fashion survival formulas projected into the future. The Master students participate in excellence programs with their professors, within projects focused on developing creativity and the formal and conceptual experiment. Starting with 2011, the Fashion Department also organizes doctoral studies.

Wishing to expand the area of study, but also in order to capitalize on the professors’ experience, we have recently founded (in 2010) an Event, Fashion and Image research center (EMI), which operates alongside the fashion Department within the National University of Arts in Bucharest. EMI emerged with the aim of concentrating and correlating the various projects initiated and carried out by the Fashion Department and in order to establish the necessary framework for the different research themes.
