After the Second World War, the need for a special department of scenography emerges within the “Nicolae Grigorescu” Institute of Fine Arts, with a program meant to take into consideration the specificity of the future scenographer’s training, whose profession involves a synthesis of the arts. The first professors in the department were V. Sigfried, Alexandru Bratasanu, Mihai Tofan, Paul Bortnovschi, Ileana Patrascanu Veachis, Vasile Roman, Constantin Albani, Vittorio Holtier and Ștefan Antonescu. The Scenography Department has the task to train the future décor and costume artist, the creator of the plasticity of spectacle. Scenography is a language very important in the context of artistic events, and the scenographer takes on, in specific historical, cultural and technical conditions, the Renaissance ideal of the universal artists who can express him/herself in any art genre, emotionally and convincingly. The achievements in the field of theater scenography, film and television scenography and scenography for animation (puppets) shows reaches international standards; throughout the times, the Romanian school provided the world of spectacle art with scenographers nationally and globally acclaimed. After 1989, the Scenography Department was revived by new specialists, which led to the establishment of new specializations: film and television scenography, puppet and event scenography.

Through their content and teaching methodology, the subjects aim at developing concrete competences. Consequently, during each year of study, one of the core subjects investigates mainly the issues of different variants of scenographic solutions, able to provide optimum conditions for the show in an appropriate environment, with functional elements of décor, the ensemble having, beyond verisimilitude and functionality, a spiritual level which approaches the spectacle as a work of art. The Department aims to create and promote the theatrical artistic values in our country and wishes to stimulate creativity in the art of dramatic shows. The program includes meetings between students with persons in theater production, critics, dramatists, but also with the public. At the same time, we organize related activities, such as scenography colloquia and exhibitions, graphics and scenographic installation. This dynamic is based on the collaboration between students and professors, in conformity with the influences of the national and international artistic, social, historical and cultural environment.

As a consequence of the demands on the labor market, there are several main directions of labor market integration. One is that of cinematography – in artistic films production, in the field of advertising (advertisements) or in video production. Another direction is that of the theater (dramatic, lyric or animation and puppet theater) or television. The graduates of the Scenography specialization can also be found in advertising graphics, some of them in leadership positions in important companies in the field. A final direction is that of freelance artists, members of the Plastic Artists Union in Romania and whose activity can be observed in their participation in national and international exhibitions, or members of UNITER (Theater Union in Romania).

The Department of Scenography and Artistic Event owns three working areas, a computer laboratory and a Master and lighting design studio. The hallway renders visible the activity in the Department through permanent exhibitions.
